Understanding Bias Settings
Properly biased tubes operate in their sweet spot where they produce clean sound with maximum headroom. Too much bias causes the tube to run hot and may lead to shorts or blown elements. Too little bias creates distortion and inefficient operation.
The bias voltage shown is calculated from your input values and represents what you should measure at the cathode with a bias probe. Always let the amp warm up for 15-30 minutes before taking readings. Record your initial measurements so you can verify adjustments.
Measurement Technique
Connect a 10 ohm resistor between the cathode lead and ground. Measure the voltage drop across this resistor with your meter. Multiply by 100 to get plate current in milliamps. For example, 0.5V across 10 ohms equals 50mA.
Common Mistakes
- Measuring cold: Tubes draw different current when cold versus warm. Always measure after warmup.
- Ignoring tube age: New tubes need 20-100 hours to stabilize. Old tubes may drift significantly.
- Wrong reference point: Measure at the cathode, not the grid. Grid voltage is negative and different from bias voltage.
- Forgetting total current: In push-pull amps, measure each side separately. Total current should match your calculation.
When to Recheck
After initial adjustment, play the amp for 30 minutes then recheck bias. Also verify after any tube replacement or if the amp sits unused for weeks. Thermal cycling can shift bias settings.
Troubleshoot Common Issues
"My bias keeps changing"
New tubes need break-in time. Let them run 50+ hours before final adjustment. If drift continues with old tubes, they may be failing and need replacement.
